E17 question

hi,

I was wondering about something when I was looking at the E17 installation guide.

It says to run pacman -S e-svn. However some other sources that I saw and even translation of the same guide shows pacman -S e17-svn. For extras we are supposed to run pacman -S e17-extra-svn
So is it really e-svn or e17-svn for enlightenment installation?

Re: E17 question

e17-svn is a group which e-svn is part of:

$ pacman -Sg e17-svn
e17-svn e-svn
e17-svn e_dbus-svn
e17-svn ecore-svn
e17-svn edje-svn
e17-svn eet-svn
e17-svn efreet-svn
e17-svn eina-svn
e17-svn embryo-svn
e17-svn evas-svn

Re: E17 question

If you're not afraid of compiling from source I would recommend using the easy_e17 script mentioned in the wiki. This will get you a newer version of e with some new features and bug fixes. Just run the script with "easy_e17.sh -i --srcrev=52995". The last argument will get you the last stable version.

Re: E17 question

mksoft, thank you

FarmerF,

I don't know yet a lot about easy_e17 script. Is it possible to use it even though I already have e17 installed? It says it will install e17 into /opt/e17 but what will happen with my currently installed e17? Will they conflict?

Re: E17 question

No they can be installed side by side withouth problem.

One catch is that they share your ~/.e directory and e removes this on start up if you switch to another version. Best bet is to backup your ~/.e dir (to keep settings like wallpaper theme and shelves etc.)  and then run easy_e17. In the worst case you will have to do all your customizing again if you switch, its irritating but not a huge problem imho. If the easy_e17 version works for you then you can stay with that one else you restore your backup and run the old one again.

You  may also have to think about how you want to start each one, then again it might "just work". If you start x on the comandline you can just call exec enlightenment_start on the correct folder (ie in /opt/e17). If you use a login manager you may have to make a second desktop file (copy /usr/share/xsessions/enlightenment.desktop and edit the target location and name)

Re: E17 question

I am using SLim logine manager. So pointing it to /opt/E17 is quite a hassle. I think I will have to change many paths for other stuff too, no?

Re: E17 question

I use slim as well and it works just fine. After running easy_e17 it will ask you to add a few lines to /etc/profile and this should take care of most of these problems for you. You can just try it and remove if it turns out to be too much trouble. I did it a while ago so I can not give you step by step instuctions.

Re: E17 question

FarmerF,

Isn't SLiM  great? I actually found out about it a couple of months ago, even though I am linux user for years. And I only saw it mentioned in Arch Handbook. But I think SLiM is the simplest and prettiest login. It doesn't have buttons for logout etc. But who needs them if you can just type "halt", "reboot", etc, right? I am glad to find another user with similar likes. E17+SLiM is light and pretty.

Now back to the subject. I will definitely try the script. Looks like it should be easy to point everything in the right direction.
