[SOLVED] Scan over network

Hi,

this seems to be a very special request or I seem to be a very stupid man.
All I want to do is scan using a HP OfficeJet6500 (a combined scanner/printer) connected to my PC via Ethernet (no host PC, no SANE server connected to it via USB).
While I know that not every scanner supports this, this one seems to because my siblings are able to scan via Ethernet using Windows.
scanimage -L only offers my Webcam as a scanning device.

hp-check says:

[...]
'hpaio' in '/etc/sane.d/dll.conf'...
OK, found. SANE backend 'hpaio' is properly set up.
[...]

According to this (German) post, a HP 6500 OfficeJet can be detected by SANE.
By the way, printing using CUPS and hplip works perfectly.

If anybody got a hint...

Thanks,
EdgarButan

Re: [SOLVED] Scan over network

Uhm, ok, I had a look at these two sites.
Hplip says my printer supports Network I/O and scanning (which I knew as I can print), and the SANE HOWTO tells me how to _share_ a scanner which is not what I want to do.

Did I overlook something?

As far as I can tell, if you are on a network you are sharing, even with one computer; it worked for me in a 1 computer test setup.(saned)

Re: [SOLVED] Scan over network

Well, I don't have even one computer directly connected to it.
There's just a switch with my computer connected on one port and the printer/scanner on another.
Am I still misunderstanding you?

That is what i meant. I think the deamon is called "saned", but I am not quite sure.
Ir works with my Epson.

Re: [SOLVED] Scan over network

Ethernet printers, cool. I never saw one. Could you post hp-probe output? I'm just being curious tongue

Try this: http://hplipopensource.com/node/212 Apparently a device uri must be registered with CUPS. hp-makeuri looks like the right tool.

And also hp-scan. It has a debug mode which could be useful.

Re: [SOLVED] Scan over network

Wow! Thanks a lot!
I'm sorry I'm very late with answering, I did not expect any further replies.
hp-makeuri and your link did the trick.

Thanks again, here is your reward wink
hp-probe output (after choosing 'net' printers):

Device URI                                      Model                 Name
  ----------------------------------------------  --------------------  --------
  hp:/net/Officejet_6500_E709a?ip=192.168.178.30  Officejet_6500_E709a  HP0AB663

Found 1 printer(s) on the 'net' bus.

(I hope this is what you were asking for, it doesn't seem too interesting to me)

Thanks to mianca too for your efforts.
