Speaking of source based distros, http://www.sourcemage.org/ is one I've been meaning to try. I love all the nerdy fantasy/DnD terminology big_smile

Re: Any nifty new distros out there?

Besides the nifty Gobo and Haiku, which were mentioned several times, I was impressed with Slitaz last I tried it.
OpenBSD just came out with 4.8, and that's always fun to poke around with. CentOS was also fun and very solid last I messed with it.

As far as recommending something that you could use every day as a real, uncompromising machine, I am stumped.
For that, I can only recommend Arch.

And dhave, when are you coming stateside to raise Black Mouth Curs?

I was actually wondering if that is a completed project though. I mean, are there enough packages to make it useful unlike HURD?

No idea.  But as an aside, >60% of Debain packages are available for its Hurd port...  That should be enough packages to be useful.

Re: Any nifty new distros out there?

Welp, in my off-hours this week I've played with Haiku, FreeBSD and Gobolinux. Fairly fun, but I've still got my socks. I was impressed again with how straightforward and integrated FreeBSD is. Maybe I'll take some other distros and alternative OSes for a spin during the Christmas holidays.

Really, nothing compares to Arch for understated coolness.

@Misfit138: Actually, we're in the States right now looking after my elderly father. It's not an ideal situation for a BMC, though. That dream will probably have to wait for a few more years. There are a few dogs around the neighborhood that I visit, though. Thanks for asking.

Take a look at some distro's from the GNU website: http://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html

I'm downloading Trisquel right now, it looks nice! smile

^^ Second on that.

And Haiku is definitely a cool project to try out.  I was a BeOS fan back in the day as well.
