Did you install nvidia from the terminal ? did you also install nvidia-utils and then run nvidia-xconfig after ?
I have nvidia and have no problems ....
Offline
yea what i actually did was i installed archlinux
then installed xorg, nouveau,
ran X -configure to generate the xorg file .
till now everything works fine i get a desktop with the normal resolution.
but now if i try to install(from the terminal not the gdm because i did not add gdm to DEAmons, i start it manually)
after installing nvidia and nvidia utils i ran nvidia-xconfig, it says multiple screens found and then i start the gdm i get a blank screen! and then nothing works. i need to shutdown using the power button!
do i need to do something else ?
@whitetimer do you have the same laptop ?
Offline
no i am running archlinux on a desktop ... I dont no anything about nouveau, but do you need to install that if you have installed nvidia ?
Offline
i even tried removing nouveau, it still didn't work.
do you have the same graphics card ?
Offline
did you install xorg ?

xorg is the backbone of graphical interfaces on linux. In order to have GUI, you install xorg.

Try setting "ConnectedMonitor" under 'device' in you nvidia-xconfig generatedr xorg.conf to what corresponds to your screen's technology.
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP" if using digital formats such as DVI or HDMI.
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT" for analogue.

@jayaram
This is what i do when i install arch.
1) Install Arch and set user & mount drives etc
2) sudo pacman -S xorg
3) sudo pacman -S mesa
4) sudo pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils
5) nvidia-xconfig .. 'or copy a saved xorg.conf file to /etc/X11/'
6) sudo pacman -S hal dbus xf86-input-evdev xf86-input-synaptics ... 'add hal to DAEMONS after syslog-ng'
then reboot
Then install DE &/or WM and add required DAEMONS to /etc/rc.conf
Hope it helps ...

yea i did the same....
i read ina lot of sites that there are problems with the 330m driver making it work in linux...
Offline
Did you blacklist nouveau in rc.conf?
MODULES=(!nouveau)
Uninstalling it doesn't help, as it is now part of the kernel.

Hi
I have a sony vaio F laptop with Nvidia Geforce 330m.
I installed nvidia and nvidia-utils and then i get a blank screen. i added the custom edid, backlisted nouveau and then if i start gdm ig et the error which says
gdm-binary gdm display lasted for XXX seconds
...
....
...max num of attempts reached.
check xserver log for errors.did any of you get it run in archlinux with the same/similar configuration?
Please post the content of your /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and also your /etc/X11/xorg.conf or /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf (depending of where you are configuring the nvidia driver).
Edit: Please don't crosspost https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=108221 and https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=108286. It makes following the issue confusing and in the future people with the same problem as you will thank you if they can find everything in a single thread.
