VIA sound drivers: no volume control!

The stock kernel's sound drivers for VIA onboard audio seem to suck... Because according to alsamixer, both Master and PCM have only two states: "on" and "off". Yes, that's right, you can't adjust the volume...

This problem does not exist on the MM kernel, though. What's going on?
