What games to kill time?

So, I'm not a gamer. I need some simple games that will pass 10 minutes at a time when I don't feel like focusing on work. I have installed tkgames from AUR, which is great, but getting old.

I've also installed picmi from AUR. Also great, but I need something new. I haven't played Super Tux yet, so I plan on trying that.

I would install Gnome-games or KDE-games, but I don't want to have to pull in a freaking DE to play sudoku.

I prefer puzzle games. Thanks. ;-)

You should give a try to moon-lander, also mah-jongg is pretty adictive but also frustrating.

I usually kill my time with nethack, GnuChess, and xmahjongg.

If you don't mind that it needs Java, Hodoku is an awesome implementation of Sudoku.
Berusky and Syasokoban fit your shokoban needs.
Bubble-Chains, beautiful, similar to Bejeweled.
Crates and Lmarbles are fun puzzle games and look nice.
For the occasional platforming fun there is Toppler, a marvellous Nebulus clone.

+1 for Dopewars

Vitetris (in AUR), a terminal based tetris game is nice too if you need help passing time.

Re: What games to kill time?

I was thinking about mentioning picmi until I realized you had it in your 'already played' list big_smile Glad you enjoyed it.

enigma (and it's newer cousin chroma) are 2 amazing puzzle games, very challenging and entertaining. They are probably not a good choice for "10 minutes inbetween" kind of play, but you might like them anyways.

Likewise, roguelikes are awesome, especially if you've never played them. The most beginner friendly roguelike is probably Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, in the community repo as 'stone-soup'. It takes a bit of time to get into them, but stone-soup is very good at this, providing ingame help and tutorials. Again, not suitable for "10 minutes" play, but great games.

Otherwise, you could try Frozen Bubble and look through the games included with Gnome/KDE. My girlfriend loves Kolor Lines. KSudoku is also very well done.

Edit: Just uploaded chroma-extras (additional levels for chroma) to the AUR
Edit2: You said you wanted to avoid Gnome/KDE games. Sorry, should've read your post more carefully before replying smile

I personally really enjoy the game Abuse, but I don't think I'd call it a puzzle game to kill time. wink

Re: What games to kill time?

The last roguelike I've been playing its hydraslayer (in AUR). Because it doesn't take much time to end the game and because it asks some math skills which is always nice.

Supertux is pretty good. Also try pingus. It is a lemmings-like puzzle game that's really fun. I know you said puzzle games, but since you mentioned supertux, you could also try supertuxkart.

Re: What games to kill time?

If you're looking for something to kill exactly ten minutes, then I'd recommend tomatoes from AUR. It's somewhat similar to bomberman, you've got 10 minutes to kill as many tomatoes as you can.

(Yeah, I know, bonus time adds makes it take longer than 10 minutes, but still...)

Re: What games to kill time?

I've recently finished carmageddon 2 again - in wine - (which brought back great memories) and super mario world in a SNES emulator (which was suprisingly boring and hard to "get into", despite my huge nostalgia about this game), lately i like to play some duke nukem 3D (with eduke32) this is also pretty cool.

and don't be mistaken, you can play games like these in a small timeframe.  In fact, eduke32 starts and loads levels instantly for me.

furthermore, tetris is always a winner.
the next game I would like to get back into is probably something like GTA2, or some adrenaline racing game like need for speed hot persuit smile

edit: +1 on dopewars

Re: What games to kill time?

This one is fun, and is made specifically to have short games spanning from 10 to 40 minutes:
