strange framerate issue

An interesting one, if I might say.

I just bought a Philips bluray/dvd/divx/xvid/mp4 player. Pretty much  'eats' anything. There's one issue. Playing avi/mp4 containered files the ouptut on my television is black/white when the framerate of the video is 23.xxx instead of 25. It's the NTSC versus PAL thing, I 'm pretty sure. Took me a long time to figure this out actually. First I thought it was the cables, then tinkered around with the fourcc's of the files...finally I discovered the NTSC/PAL thingie...

Has anyone ever met this funny problem? I might add that my tv is pretty old ( a 15 year old samsung ). It's connected through scart and a composite to scart adapter ( the yellow jack into scart )..could it be that older tv's only play PAL. It's apparantly not a problem with the new player. It's set allright.

I've been able to use avidemux to alter the audio and videostream from 23.xxx to 25 fps for several files. And subtitleeditor to change the framerate or several srt's. It's doable but takes awhile. Another option is to make svcd's of the video's, but that takes even longer using ffmpeg and is a big loss of quality.

Should I buy a new tv-set?

Are there any other solutions?

Thanks in advance.
