Would never ever touch my system for such a gimmick
*YAWN* - you could try debian stable - i think that is devoid of anything even remotely gimmicky!
Ok, it *** IS *** cool. I would be glad if it would be accommodated by community kernels.

Fixed problem with /usr/bin/fgconsole and wc not found errors. Looks like my /usr was not mounted at the point, where scripts tried to acces these files (I copied them to /sbin) .
But Problem with gensplash rc script still is there and it doesn't want to go anywhere . I just don't understand why it should not set backgrounds when started from rc.conf, but work perfectly, when started from command-line by typing sude /etc/rc.d/gensplash start ? Strange.. :?

Nop, I use it too, and as does the Archi live CD.

Impressive. I thought if one fights the candy war like you do, he has propably no partnership and plenty of time.
No, I have very little time to do anything - I am working in South-East Asia on a self-funded research project (i.e. i am in massive personal debt!) and all my internet is via i cafe and trips to the mall with my laptop - most of my spare time I spent doing this stuff and maintaining my repo + I have the forum adviser job, which can bring some unexpected reponsibilities
My girlfriend is currently doing the last deep dive of her course, I am shore bound
Dalius - this is common issue, try setting default8x16.psfu.gz as your CONSOLEFONT in rc.conf - this fixes it for most
As far as /usr not being mounted ... hmmm, that's a tricky one - the gentoo guy gets round it by storing these bins in /lib/splash/bin - which I guess can't be on a separate partition, which I guess is why the cache is stored there to!
Oh, and thanks for figuring out the mount prob, I could never have guessed that from where I am sitting!
lucke -
If you are having issues with text overwriting your screen in silent mode please check that are using the console=tty1 and quiet options in your bootloader config.
Naughty!

I have started a troubleshooting section on the wiki
I am aware a new version of splashutils is out - I am on holiday but it should be up by wednesday

What are the benefits of gensplash vs bootsplash? i just glanced at the bootsplash page and it looks like it does pretty much the same thing ie. animated progressbars, silent, and verbose.

fbsplash is practically a rewrite. The author of fbsplash doesnt really like the way the bootsplash was done, embedding a jpeg decoder inthe kernel and whatnot, so he rewrote it attempting to keep as much as possible in userspace.

droog, everything's explained here: http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/projects/gensplash/faq.php
dibble, I'm happy with verbose, that's why I haven't researched any deeper ;-) But, hey, you've managed to get it all working properly, even with all those 'evil' upstream changes. Congrats :-)

Hi,
Stranage issues here...
I've just set consolefont to load default8x16.psfu.gz font at boot in rc.conf, but still cant see any backgrounds on vc's. Just on the first one. I double checked that in wiki, but it does not want to work.:?
Copied wc and fgconsole to /lib/splash/bin, linked them to /bin and changed line #115 in /etc/rc.d/functions:
from local ctty="$(/usr/bin/fgconsole)" to local ctty="$(/bin/fgconsole)".
Now I get no errors at boot but still can't see any backgrounds.

spl_cachedir
jw the location of spl_cachedir is hard coded so i can't see how your fix will help - it is also the reason it is in a less "sensible" place - i take a small amount of offense that you think I choose to put it there!
fair enough dib. sorry for questioning your intelligence and/or sanity ;-).
anyways, I updated to `gensplashutils-1.1.9.3-7' and everything seems to be WORKING FINE now. congrats and thanks for the great work!

cool! we're getting somewhere then, guys!
i am, of course, sincerely grateful for your patience in testing and reporting this stuff!
Dalius, hmmmm, it's a puzzler that! i'll look over the scripts and see if anything strikes me!

Well I've tried cko with 2.6.11 kenel and nothing. Same as before, no errors but no splash. Could someone point me in the direction of a patchset we all know works?

Morph patchset works here ;-)

2.6.11-morph8 works great here too Haven't treid silent but I don't really want to so that's not a problem.
Offline
that's odd...
glad it is working now tho!

OK - new version going up - be warned it's buggy!
There is an upstream bug that causes this:

@cam:
well, i am running 2.6.11-cko2 and gensplash is working fine for me. for reference, i compiled with the tng-framebuffer and have `console=tty1' (lowercase) in my menu.lst.

Hmm... I am using cko4 and have some problems too (as you can see above ), so maybe this patchset has something to do with them?
And if yes, what are good patchsets out there, that support fbsplash/vesafb-tng and other neat things (inotify, etc... libata patch for sata on SmartMonTools, preferably)? So far I have only found morph and cko (I want something reasonably stable).
Looks like if I will find/be pointed to a good patch it wil be time for kernel recompile to se how fbsplash works there.
PS.:
Morph didn't wanted to compile for me, so I cant try that.

Hi,
Just came here to announce that it works now . that problem with not displaying backgrounds on other vc's was fixed with uncommenting these lines
#SPLASH_THEME="ArchPool"
and
#SPLASH_TTY_MAP="1:emergence 2:ArchPool"
Also I had to manualy set backgrounds on every console like this:
SPLASH_TTY_MAP="1:ArchMetal 2:ArchMetal 3:ArchMetal"
Now it works perfectly . Cool.
Thanks dibble for such a nice package.

Weird! You shouldn't have to have done that! I'll work out why you did hopefully...
I reported the pink screen bug and it is a bug! Hurrah! It only affects bpp16 modes and should be fixed in the next version which is due for release shortly.
Just to let you all know.
I am also working on getting silent boot messages working

I would like to try gensplash but don't have knowledge and it seems a relatively complex process.
Would anyone please build a generic kernel packge patched with gensplash?
A PKGBUILD that uses arch's default kernel config would do it

Hello all - there maybe an issue regarding whether you are using udev or devfs - if you are using devfs and cannot get genplash to work read on!
If you are using udev, as i am, you should be ok with the console=tty1 on your console line (or CONSOLE=/dev/tty1) however, if you are using devfs you may need to use CONSOLE=/dev/vc/1
I CANNOT TEST THIS!
