Re: Archlinux current iso

Arch doesn't release like that... Arch is generally based on alot of downloading due to the nature of version changes on different packages... the "current" listing on distrowatch is not an iso, but the state of the downloadable packages....

yeah, arch works best with a good network connection... I only ever use the base iso, because the packages on the normal iso are outdated rather fast...

if you install on multiple computers, you can always do "pacman -Syu" on one computer, and copy the cached packages to the others....

Re: Archlinux current iso

I agree though, I think arch does need more frequent "releases". Where a release here is just a package freeze and burn.

Re: Archlinux current iso

i agree the idea of a current iso is appealing.  but, for me, only in the case where your installing on computers without connections.

an idea just hit maybe (or maybe it's just gas), it would be neat if you could generate a custom iso from your systems current package set.  no downloads neeeded, and decent crash recovery.   you could even spec out which config files you want pushed to the iso: xorg.conf, menu.lst, rc.conf, fstab, etc...  you could even install all package and have a near perfect reinstallation, clean.

arch-0.8.1.jp-2005.05.03-0730

while were at it... maybe we can auto gen an archie cd as a clone of our current system....

ok, time for coffee....

Re: Archlinux current iso

wouldn't the easiest solution be an archlinux-installation package which would provide the /arch/setup and other stuf included on the CD (besides the packages). Some /var/pacman_installation_cd could be created with a 'create_iso' script next to it (that will copy the packages, kernel and configure some stuff and then create an ISO

Re: Archlinux current iso

I don't believe there will ever be a complete, up to date iso image. Archs packages are allways nearly up to date, so your complete iso will be out dated minutes after burning it. What I would suppose you to do, is take the current arch iso, start ftp install. Install only a minimal system. Reboot, and finish the installation by adding all your packages. Then run pacman -Ql, and fetch a list of all installed packages. If you mount your iso, it might be possible to change the package list the setup script is asking for (I guess it is a static list in there), throw away things you don't want and add your own packages. Burn the iso, start ftp install unsing it on the next machine, select all packages, done. If you are a good scripter, you might add static preselected partitioning, too ... Could be quite cool.

Only a raw idea.

Re: Archlinux current iso

it shouldn't be hard to take the iso, unpack it, grab the newest versions of whatever packages are on the CD (from the ftp) and re-image the iso...

this could be setup as a cron job on someone's home server and perhaps given to the world to use... *shrug*

Arch won't support that, as it's not important, but if anyone in the community wants to do this, I think it'd be a good idea, as there's alot of call for something like this

Re: Archlinux current iso

Wouldn't it be quite simple to have an iso that is automaticallu updated every week/month  ?

someone would still have to invest time to work in this. any volunteers? you? tongue
i mean i actually do prefer an "old" image which' problems i already know and can easily circumvent instead of running into new trouble day by day. yes i do setup lots of boxes. about 5-6 a week.

Re: Archlinux current iso

I could volunteer for such a project yes, although I have no idea how they do the "real" image, but if someone would give me the time to learn...then it is just a matter of a cron job isn't it?
All files are on the net yes?
then a cronjob on the ftpserver and voila (i'm guessing they have shell-access to their ftp) a script that is automatically doing the iso every week or every month is a piece of cake..

Although I don't use more than the base-install and then pacman, but maybe others would be quite happy...not everyone has broadband...

My believ however is that there are many competent users out there that must have thought of this before, the question is why doesn't it already exists?

I think Archie spawned from this idea...somewhere I remember someone having a script which created an install CD with the packages you want on it - it involved some ftp downloading and mkisofs...

Re: Archlinux current iso

i'ld like to know what is used to generate the per release iso.  if it's just some slick scripting, could we get ahold of that and use that/package it up to make personal install cds?

the current iso is a fine idea, but my only interest would be in having a tool that could rip me an snapshot of my system into an install cd.  'cause i want to turn a 30 minute install/setup into 5. :-)

well, it's really just 4-5 commands or so... here's how it works:

to make an iso, you use mkisofs (I don't know the params)... and there's a similar command to extract an iso.

use current iso, extract to my_install_iso
find the repository location on the CD (I don't know the path offhand)
update it with proper packages from the ftp mirrors
use mkisofs to turn my_install_iso into an iso image
burn + enjoy

viola!

It could be a job for http://atterer.net/jigdo/ to create iso images. But I feel well having fresh installs over the net.

Re: Archlinux current iso

yeah updating the iso is an option.

there's still the image that it boots during install, the default install kernels, modules and such.  i didn't know if those were just ripped from the current kernel package or what.   also, as in my previous post, i would like to create defaults (my current) for menu.lst and xorg and such.  (while we're wishing, why not list of everything ;-) )

i may look at this more later.  just a moderately fun problem to solve.

Re: Archlinux current iso

After a day work it is pretty much done; please comment

http://archlinux.spider007.net/update_a … archISO.sh

put next to existing ISO file and enter

./update_archISO.sh current.iso

Will update base and kernels. Requires:
* root permission
* pacman
* mkisofs
* wget

GJ - post it in the user contributions forum so we can link to it the next time people ask for a more current iso (or the next release)

I have created a new topic for the script; I will also add a screenshot there. Bugs / features please post them in update_archISO.sh - update archlinux_base.iso to current

Re: Archlinux current iso

You did a nice stuff but I think what 'slow or no connection' people would like is a package cd/dvd.
Creating such a cd/dvd with gensync  and burning the repo is a pain to do without a fast connection.
It's much easier to tell a friend "could you dowload that url/torrent" than tell him to play with obscure gensync tool.

Then they can ask 'a friend' to download the package, can't they? I don't see what that has to do with an up-to-date installation iso? smile

Re: Archlinux current iso

:shock:  smile  big_smile

Thx to all!

Nice idea, great community.

I think it will be great that we release an "current iso" 2 time at month and 1 time at month if it wasnt too much movement.

what do you think about it ?
