So I removed alsa from DAEMONS () in /etc/rc.conf and that error isnt showed anymore, but problem still remains. I cant hear audio over HDMI while playing it with aplay..
I tested speakers jack, and spdif out and both work. All spdif stuff (which one for shure is hdmi) are unmuted.
There is nothing in /etc/modprobe.d/ for this soundcard, its clean system and in dmesg, as posted before is:

Hi,
Thnx for replay i actualy tried it right now but didnt work for sound over HDMI..
[~]$ alsamixer
[~]$ aplay -D plughw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Right.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Right.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
[~]$ aplay -D plughw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Right.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Right.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
[~]$
I copied that from last post in /etc/asound.conf rebooted pc, used alsamixer to unmute all PCM and tryed playing a file, no error but also no audio.. I have also yavdr 0.2 ubuntu 10.04 based whith kernel 2.6.32-23 i think and overthere it works for sound over hdmi, Copied same asound.conf to archlinux and here it doesnt play sound over hdmi...

I have no idea about HDMI but try this:
aplay -D plug:hdmi /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Offline
I have tried that to and its playing without errors just there isnt audio on speakers from my LCDTV. I have dual boot system with yavdr 0.2 to and overthere audio over hdmi works just fine, tried same asound.con on archlinux no go...
And yes i tried plug:hdmi, if you try with plughw:hdmi there is ofcourse error: ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1401:(_snd_pcm_hw_open) Invalid value for card aplay: main:654: audio open error: No such device.
[@ ~]$ alsamixer
[@ ~]$ aplay -D plug:hdmi /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
[@ ~]$
Still have no idea what should i do .

I have the same problem and I can't find a solution. I tried the solution of this thread:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=78058
I have exactly the same computer but seems to have stopped working. When I do:
aplay -D plug:hdmi /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
No errors showed and no sound. I already checked alsamixer, everything is unmuted. This is my hardware:
[alex@Insomnia ~]$ aplay -l

Having similar problem. I currently dont get any sound out from my tv by hdmi cable. Motherboard: zotac ion itx d-e (Nvidia MCP79) my alsa.conf has been following and working with out any problems:
pcm.!default {
type hw
card 0
device 3
}ctl.!default {
type hw
card 0
}
Checked my alsamixer settings and there are iec958 lines muted which i dont use. My current software versions are: kernel26 2.6.35.8-1, alsa-lib 1.0.23-2, nvidia 260.19.21-1
Im not sure when it stopped to work but it worked like 1-2 months ago for me

I have/had the same problem on a Zotac ION Zbox. I've not found a satisfactory solution but what I ended up doing was trying an install of Ubuntu Desktop to test it with as I thought that'd stand a better chance of working as it wasn't up to me to configure anything.
That had the same problem: aplay -D plughw:0,3.... didn't fail but there was no sound from the TV/HDMI, until: I logged in and Gnome used the soundcard for the logon sound, then sound via HDMI started working. Previously I wasn't running Gnome, just startx and xbmc-standalone, pulse was also running (not sure that matters though as I was by-passing pulse with the aplay?). If I logon to the Ubuntu install over SSH and I've not logged into the Ubuntu desktop already (triggering the logon sound), the aplay command doesn't produce sound.
Once Gnome's been started I can run the aplay -D plughw:0,3.... and get sound out of the TV/HDMI. I've no idea where to start looking at solving this though, for now it's working so I'm happy enough with that though I'd like to go back to a nice clean Arch install and not have Gnome running in the background.

I created a new install of Arch because I really wanted to understand why I couldn't get this working. Turned out to be a reasonably simple reason that I'd just not thought of with my original install.
I'd not tried the aplay -D plughw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav from a terminal in an X session, I'd been trying it via SSH and the TTY's with no X running. Once I ran in from within a basic X session (no gnome installed, just the default X) it worked. I figure this is because the HDMI port on the telly needs a handshake of a certain kind and that's only happening when the X servers feeding HDMI.

Still can't get the sound to work in XBMC even with plughw:0,3 as the custom audio output device (that's apparently worked for others), though, I can get sound from a term window in X's default window manager (TWM?) so I guess it's not really a problem with drivers, X or Alsa but something in XBMC.
If anyone has any ideas where I can look it'd be appreciated though I think it's more appropriate if I ask on the XBMC forums.

Finally got it working:
/etc/asound.conf:
pcm.!default {
type plug
slave {
pcm "hw:0,3"
rate 48000
}
}
Offline
Finally got it working:
/etc/asound.conf:
pcm.!default {
type plug
slave {
pcm "hw:0,3"
rate 48000
}
}
This is odd cause this didnt solve it for me either way im doing the conf file. Also removed the ~/.asoundrc

Same issue here with a Zotac. Have someone figured this out?!
however... I get sound when using:
speaker_test -c 2 -D plughw:0,3
speaker_test -c 2 -D plug:hdmi
speaker_test -c 2
All of them working. But when trying XBMC I can't get any sound. I have tried VLC aswell and set it to use ALSA as output to hw 0,3, but nothing.
I will keep on trying.
BTW sound via SPDIF and the analog jack works.

Got it working!!!
added the following to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf and rebooted
options snd-hda-intel bdl_pos_adj=64
options snd slots=snd-hda-intel
I saw in my /var/log/messages.log that there was an error:
grep bdl_pos_adj /var/log/messages.log
Dec 9 10:26:12 localhost kernel: hda-intel: IRQ timing workaround is activated for card #0. Suggest a bigger bdl_pos_adj.
Googled for that and found a solution at: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get- … und-2.html
Hoope this helps someone
