I don't have a working internet connection at home, but I would really love to have the gnome desktop. Which packages do i need to download (i can look up the dependancies myself) for gnome, and gnome-extras
EDIT: Is there a pacman equivilent to portage's emerge --pretend? Just so I can see which packages it will try to install?

I don't think Arch will serve you well if you don't have internet connection since Arch packages are frequently being updated.
pacman -S gnome gnome-extra
It'll show what deps are needed at download time

go to the nearest neighbour that got broadband and take your box with you and install everything you want on it, if you choose a fast mirror it will be done in 15 min,
arch + gentoo + initng + python = enlisy

Maybe some distro that already have Gnome and caca load of other apps? Personally I think it's easier to have a bloat distro, and unbloat it as much as you can at the installation time than to get a trim distro, downloading apps and deps manually, dumping them onto CD or mem stick, and adding features. The problem is, if you miss "a" dep for whatever package, it won't install. Without it, other apps depends on that app won't install. Hence, having to go back to wherever you can download "a" dep. And the same thing happen if you want to add a new app. My app/dep listing isn't complete, because I'm sure there are deps that aren't listed due to the fact I already have it installed. Having the internet connection automatically takes care of the missing dep, but without it, you'll spend too much time going back and fort between your home and wherever you download packages at. While if you had one of those feature rich distros, you wouldn't have to worry about that.

I think you all are right, but I want a distro that is quick and simple...like arch

It shouldn't be so bad if you can somehow get a hold of internet connection just to install something big like Gnome I think. At least big stuff are taken care of, and other apps "usually" don't require such huge dependencies. So yeah, try and see if you can "borrow" someone else's connection for about one hour if you could. At least you can update Arch to the most up to date, have the most recent packages installed. That way, you won't be running Arch on the months old system And update like in...6 months? If you don't have internet connection, at least your computer is secure.
