Is Crossover Games Worth Buying?

Hello everyone. I have been wanting to dust off some of my older games, such as Sim City 4, Oblivion, and Puzzle Quest Galactrix. I've been looking at Crossover games, and it appears that it will play all of those. However, I was curious how well it works with Arch? It seems like Ubuntu is the target that most of these third party products target, so I'm wondering if I can expect it to work well in Arch and if it's worth buying.

I tried PlayonLinux but found it's pretty much worthless as it stands right now.

I'm sure opinions vary on this subject but I think it's better to play them natively. You could try dual booting a Tiny XP or better yet Micro XP setup with a custom LiteStep theme (and boot screen). Sure, it's like putting lipstick on a pig. But it works.

Crossover's patches on top of wine aren't very substantial, I've heard. Never used it, wine does what I want for the games I want.

Crossover does work in Arch though, so if you're willing to pay for it knock yourself out. I'd simply use wine and donate directly to the project though...

Your question seems a bit strange to me since there are time limited trial versions of Crossover Games available. You can find out both if Crossover Games places nicely on your system as well as if your targeted games run without hickup.

Since I am an advocate for Crossover Games (some sort of "application tester") I was quite intensively using it on my Ubuntu 9.1 x64 host. Unfortunately under arch64 I never tested it. Esp. since WINE always worked nice for me.

My 2 cents on any Crossover product:
If you are able to deal with the wineprefix, winetricks and all this stuff then Crossover will not provide anything special. Their major work (beside providing a lot of WINE fixes) is providing a nice looking GUI which lets you manage wineprefixes as "bottles" and enshuring that fixes in WINE do not break compatibility with the officially supported apps.

I never knew there was a trial for Crossover Games. I'll check that out tonight.

I just dual boot to run stuff like Oblivion natively. I figure since I have it all loaded up with graphics mods and so forth, it would probably run better or faster in its native land rather than adding layers. For lighter-weight games that I want to be able to start and stop quickly without a reboot for a marathon session (like I do for Oblivion), I just use regular Wine.

That said, it looks like all 3 games you mentioned got gold ratings on Appdb, so I wouldn't see much reason to do Crossover when they should work fine in Wine.
