Hi,
I logged into my Arch box and, as always, it went into GDM but my screen resolution is all screwed up. My monitor has a max of 1920x1080 but it went to 640x480 and I can't set it back. I tried to go to nvidia-settings but it says I can't have more than 640x480. I also tried to set it in xorg.conf and it didn't work. I executed nvidia-xconfig and it's still the same.
What's wrong, this never happend before.
Thanks in advance

Have you updated the kernel recently? What do your XOrg logs show? Any errors in dmesg? Need many more details.

Uh oh, I messed up. I was googling for some fixes and changed to an unsupported refresh rate.
Now I can't even start Arch.

Easy enough. Boot into a liveCD or USB, mount your arch partition and change the setting back.

Ok I mounted my fs.
Which values should I use under HorizSync and VertRefresh?

I don't know what monitor you have, so I can't tell you that. You don't remember what they were before you messed with them? If not, either comment them out or look them up on google.

Found this is dmesg:

usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.

And this is the xorg log:

Don't know if it's relevant.

How do you connect to your monitor? Have you changed your cables recently?
Offline
I connect it using DVI and no, I have not changed my cables recently.

I just recognized that CRT are those old screens. I'm using an LCD so is there some kind of hardware incompatibility?

if it's worked in the past that would appear to rule out a hardware incompatibility... your changing of the settings seems a much more likely culprit.
an option is to boot into run level 3 so X isn't started by default and try generating a new xorg.conf using something like xorg --configure or nvidia-xconfig or whatever seems most appropriate... after backing up your current config, of course. If you're not used to booting into alternate run levels, when you get to your grub menu select the standard option and press e to edit the command... then put a 3 on the end of the line to force run level 3
as far as valid refresh rates, google will give you better results than us guessing

Hello.
I had the same problem when I tried to install ArchLinux the very first time. The second time I was successful, but I am not entirely sure what fixed it: it was either (a) the fact that I installed the proprietary NVIDIA drivers, or (b) the fact that I followed the installation directions for X very closely down to the last word. Don't try to install a desktop manager until you are 100 percent certain that X is configured correctly.
It doesn't look like anyone has supplied you with any super solution, so maybe you will eventually need to try a reinstall. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice, dillesca.
I'll wait some more time to see if someone can come up with a solution.
I just updated my system and installed the latest kernel drivers and nvidia drivers, the problem still persists.
