Processing curses program output

Okay, so I just finished with the google ai challenge and I want another ai project. I've considered writing a nethack playing bot in the past and I wanted to give it another go. Like last time though, I've run into the problem of processing all the color and style information embedded in the output of nethack.

So basically what I want to know is, does anyone know a python (or possibly c) library that will process the output and tell me the color/style of any character in the text? Any help would be appreciated.

btw, I've looked a little at TAEB, but it's no longer developed (I think...) and I can't find a download. Anyone know where I can get it?
