Problems with kernel26 2.6.36.1-3, black screen on startup

EDIT I find the problem, it is no the xorg server or intel driver but the kernel! I modified the title of this topic and i ask the moderators if it is possible to move this thread to the right section! thanks

Hi,
this night i have updated through pacman the xorg-server and the intel driver but now the system is not able to start.
In particular the package are:
xf86-video-intel    2.13.0-4
xorg-server 1.9.2-2
but the system was able to start in fallback mode, so i decided to downgrade the driver intel with the 2.12.0-3 version...Now the system won't start. I also tried to downgrade the xorg-server to the previous version but the situation doesn t change..
How can I find out the problem?

Thanks.

What other packages did you install when you updated? Please post some log files as well—xorg logs and dmesg output might help. What errors do you see? What happens when it doesn't start? Do you see a black screen? Kernel panic?

Re: Problems with kernel26 2.6.36.1-3, black screen on startup

Thanx for the reply..i've updated other packages but unfortunatly i don't remember the names, there is a method to find out the last updated packages?

I take a look at xorg log file but there is only one old error for the synaptic touchpad (always had).
in the dmesg i don t see anything strange. When i start the system i see a completely black screen.

for completeness i try to post the logs file:

Thanx for the reply..i've updated other packages but unfortunatly i don't remember the names, there is a method to find out the last updated packages?

Re: Problems with kernel26 2.6.36.1-3, black screen on startup

I delete everything I said! Using the pacman log file i ve reinstalled all the previous pkg and i find that the problem is the new kernel26 2.6.36.1-3..
I don t know why but if i install it when i start the system i obtain a completely black screen..

So i modified the title of this topic and i ask the moderators if it is possible to move this thread to the right section!

Thanks

Re: Problems with kernel26 2.6.36.1-3, black screen on startup

tons of weirdness with 2.6.36 I'm downgrading. mainly hard restarts several times a day. just a kernel thing. sorry can't help on specifics. I'd read about and do kernel downgrade. simply boot from arch cd (after writing down the stuff to put in comand line from wiki page 'kernel panics' and also find you old kernel 2.6.34 or 2.6.35 in the /var/cache/pacman/pkg folder
you probably know this. just reminding myself as well.

Re: Problems with kernel26 2.6.36.1-3, black screen on startup

Same problem here, after kernel switches to KMS screen stays completely black.
I also tried a recent vanila dev kernel 2.6.37-rc2, I have a picture there but a LOT of tearing and flickering.

If i disable KMS with 'nomodeset' i can get the vesa driver to load and at least have a picture.

same problem here. installing kernel26-lts solved the issue for me.

Re: Problems with kernel26 2.6.36.1-3, black screen on startup

seems to be specific to certain laptop hardware. (In my case a HP probook 5320m)
Currently I reverted to the last 2.6.35 kernel and everything works like before.

Before reverting I also tried the xf86-video-intel-git from AUR with libdrm-git, still same problem.

If I have time I will probably try to bisect the problem, because even in the latest git kernel there seems to be a problem. (tearing, flickering and sometimes the screen blinks black, completely unusable)

Re: Problems with kernel26 2.6.36.1-3, black screen on startup

yep, laptop here asus m50sv/nvidia with crash hard restart problems.

refreshed my ability to revert, did so, back to 35 then due to lack of skill in other areas found that 35 was causing weirdness with deps or something so had to go back to 36...

still smiling hoping for new kernel I guess. Or several hours (days even) to get my skills up on kernel/downgrade.

Glad I'm not the only one.

I filed a bug report here:

If you suffer from this problem PLEASE add your details to the report to help the developers solve this!

Re: Problems with kernel26 2.6.36.1-3, black screen on startup

i had the same problem with intel video. removing vga=773 from /boot/grub/menu.lst fixed it. strange.
