well im upgrading my graphics card and had nvidia 9400gt fully functional and wanted to see if an ati radeon HD 4650 would be better.well i installed everything amd/ati i could find and couldnt find anything on catalyst.my comp is a compaq presario s6200cl and cant find much help on the radeon wiki or google.
when i plug the radeon VGA card in i get a non responsive black screen and the numlock/capslock keys wont do anything.even if i put my monitor into the default port its still the same.not quite sure if i dont have enough power or drivers or what.i tried looking up to see my psu but couldnt get much info i keep finding mixed wattages like 200 one second then 300 and 450 on other websites.
do i need to add new mirrors to dowload drivers?
EDIT: the main problem of getting an unresponsive machine is from the graphics card being plugged in the VGA slot as its on my desk hooked up to the psu and the fan is working. :<

good place to start: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI_Catalyst

ya was there before but not quite sure how to
"installing catalyst 10.1
- download the catalyst AUR package from http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=29111 make a package with makepkg and install it with pacman -U catalyst*.pkg.tar.gz
- run the command "aticonfig --initial" to build or change the xorg.conf file"
because im on a command lne interface and thus would have to do something like wget -a [link] but its on the aur right i just cant figure out how to get the catalyst packages and whatnot.

everything says there available on the aur but i must have mine set wrong

i didnt look in details and i'm not using any ati card but it looks like:
1. you can build catalyst by yourself using AUR. simply download the tarball with wget, extract it and build the package. http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/catal … yst.tar.gz
or
2. add the repo mentioned on the wiki page and directly install the binary.

ill probably hunt down the repo but i was looking before ill do ctrl-f or something.thank you very much for helping me

one more thing <.< i did tar -zxvf catalyst.tar.gz and i have these files

o um just one teeny thing >.> not all dependencies were satisfied im missing a catalyst-utils=10.11 could not find or read package.

it's in AUR too. i'd recommend you to install one of the numerous AUR helpers (clyde, packer for example). it'll be more simple.

so i dl'd lib32-catalyst-utils.tar.gz got it unpacked and when i as superuser do makepkg -s --asroot it tells me ERROR: is not available for the 'i686' architecture.Note that many packages may need a line added to their PKGBUILD such as arch=('i686').
heres a list of files in the directory
lib32-catalyst.sh
lib32-catalyst-utils.install
PKGBUILD

i think im getting my 64 and 32 bit os's mixed up when there referred to as x86_64 and i686
i thought i686=32bit right?
im using i686 arch nd dl'd the 32bit package but it thinks its an x86_64

well this is odd im trying to sudo makepkg -s --asroot on catalyst and it tells me its missing dependencies catalyst-utils=10.11 so i look for it in the aur and do a wget to get lib32-catalyst-utils.tar.gz and when i try a sudo makepkg -s --asroot same error about dependencies same missing dependencies :<.i was so close this time to

you need catalyst-utils, not it's lib32 version which is for 64bit machines. And dont build as root, it kills unicorns.
