[solved] Gnome 2.30 with Compiz - xcursor theme problem

Hello all.

After the recent upgrade to gnome 2.30 I've notice that the cursor under compiz/emerald stays in the "default" theme, no matter what you set on configs...

All my computers, after the upgrade, show the "default" theme cursor, except when passing the cursor over GTK apps like firefox or openoffice (when it shows the selected cursor theme) or over window close/max/min buttons.

If you switch from compiz to metacity, the theming works normally.

I've tested this with all themes I have installed, in many computers.

Any ideas how to solve this?

Hi there
I'm new to this forum and recently moved to Arch after being a long time Fedora user, so far i love it. Unfortunately i have the same problem as the users above, i cannot change the cursor theme since after the GNOME 2.30 update yesterday regardless what i try. Installed themes don't even show up under Appearance > Theme > Customize > Pointer. I used the Wiki guide and installed some with yaourt but I only see the default redglass + whiteglass themes.

I'm not sure if this can work but go into your Xdefaults and follow the instructions in this wiki article.

Right, using .Xresource or .Xdefaults to set the xcursor theme can solve the problem, I just did it.

But it's not so convenient, I still wait for the updates from the official.

Copy your pointer theme to ~/.icon. It will work. I've just installed some new icon/pointer themes this way today

Unfortunatelly, for me, it didnt work. I created .Xdefaults and put the reference to my icon theme - "Polar-Blue" - following the instructions in the link.

Then, I copyied the icon-theme from /usr/share/icon to ~/.icons AND to ~/.icon (after i've created this directory, to follow the instructions of siriusb).

After that, I've logout and log in again...

The problem persists.

As there is a bug repport opened... I'll wait for an official solution.

In the meantime, any new ideas/considerations would be apreciated.

Maybe try a different cursor theme. Install the DMZ package(xcursor-vanilla-dmz) and set the cursor theme to Vanilla-DMZ. It's the default Ubuntu cursor.

Using /usr/share/icons/default like the one explained in X11_Cursors wiki worked for me.

By using this method, gdm will also use the cursor theme, because for what I've been searching, it uses system's default gconf tree found in /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/

Yes using /usr/share/icons/default like the one explained in X11_Cursors wiki did indeed work.

I dont think its the best solution, as it demands that you change the file manualy everytime you want to change your cursor theme, but its MUCH better than staying with the default cursor and no alternative.

*In ~/.icons/default put the following index.theme file written below. Change the name, and Inherits to the cursor of choice. Save and then reload window manager. This will enable you to change cursors without having to log out and in everytime you want to change your cursor. The "Inherits=" will make the cursor theme work in GDM. Each time you change to a differant cursor use # to comment out the "name=" and "Inherits=" and make a new name and Inherits comment. That way your index.theme file will have a list of all the cursors that you use.
*(Make sure your pointer is set to default in Appearance Preferances. Otherwise you will still get a differant cursor theme in applications such as firefox. In Appearance Preferances click on the theme tab, go to customize, click on pointer tab and select default pointer.)

Same Problem here, but creating /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme does not work.

I have the DMZ-White theme in /usr/share/icons

If I choose default pointer in Appearance Preferances, still the X-default-Theme is used.
And in the DMZ-White Theme does not appear in "Appearance Preferances --> Theme --> costumize --> Pointer" at all.

I tried also other themes (which appear in the Pointer Tab) but it does not work. Still the X-default-Theme

Are there maybe any other things I've missed.
Why does the DMZ-White Theme not appear in the Pointer Tab in Appearance Prefs?
I'm using Gnome since a few days ...
