changelog for official arch packages?

This might below in the Newbie section, but here goes: I noticed that there is a new kernel package that was released today.  Are there notes/changelogs kept for these packages?  I went into the http interface for the package in the repo, but didn't see anything obvious.  Thanks!

Re: changelog for official arch packages?

I imagine the svn commit message should, in theory, have some relevance.
http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/k … D?view=log

Not sure how well that holds in practice however.

This answer bugs me too. Is there any thing at all.

Is there a way to read what was changed for example in gdm? It doesn't have to be in pacman itself telling it, could be 3rd-party or web.

You can visit the package's official website .

Re: changelog for official arch packages?

True for upstream changes, but at this case I think Arch devs have patched gdm, wrong?

[10:42:08 taavi@hyperion ~]$ pacman -Q gdm
gdm 2.32.0-1

http://ftp.acc.umu.se/pub/GNOME/sources/gdm/2.32/

Re: changelog for official arch packages?

One way could be opening Log of PKGBUILD from http://www.archlinux.org/packages/

Maybe there's a tool for it?

Re: changelog for official arch packages?

Only some packages have changelogs. They can be viewed at any time:

man pacman wrote:

QUERY OPTIONS
       -c, --changelog
           View the ChangeLog of a package. Not every package will provide one but it will be shown if available.

[karol@black ~]$ pacman -Qc htop
2009-09-21  Eric Belanger  <eric@archlinux.org>

    * htop 0.8.3-1
    * Upstream update
    * Built with vserver and openvz support (close FS#12755)

2008-12-09  Alexander Fehr  <pizzapunk gmail com>

    * htop-0.8.1-1:
    * New upstream release
    * New maintainer
    * Added patch to fix FS#12235
    * Enabled Unicode support
    * Added ChangeLog

Re: changelog for official arch packages?

Is the changelog something that has to be provided by the maintainer?

Yes.
I mean you don't *have to* add it if you're a maintainer, but the packages themselves don't come with one by default. The changelog is created manually by the maintainer.

Re: changelog for official arch packages?

Well that explains why not all packages would have changelogs.

pkgrel being bumped doesn't mean that we patch it. in most cases are simply rebuilds to link against new soname or a packaging bug

gdm changelog:

2.32.0-1->2.32.0-2 permission fixed for /var/lib/gdm from root:gdm to gdm:gdm
2.32.0-2>-2.32.0-3 patch to drop bonobo dependency that comes from gnome-panel-bonobo.

all this changes are well documented in the commit log. http://repos.archlinux.org/wsvn/package … g&isdir=1&

And very few official packages will have one as the vast majority of the developers find it a waste of time...  especially given we are somewhat verbose in the svn commit message.

Re: changelog for official arch packages?

For what it's worth, this question was answered in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=206793, and the user submitted package called paclog was created.

I found it useful in this way:

$ paclog conky|head -10
   Age                     Commit message                             Author
