PDF/PS Woes

Hi all,

I've been making some EPS figures and editing them in inkscape (inkscape 0.48.0-4). However, I have to first turn them into PDFs or I get a ghostscript (9.00-1) error.
Once I'm done I have to save as eps, which doesn't work (sometimes whole parts of the figure are replaced by whitespace, and I'm sure it's not the bounding box).

Saving as pdf works fine, but then I need pdf2ps (owned by ghostscript) or pdftops (owned by poppler 0.14.4-1) to convert back to EPS.
Unfortunately, both of these create huge files that look terrible. I'm at a loss as to what could be wrong, or whether there's just a simple option that I should be aware of.

Any suggestions?
