Installing kernel26: Parsing hook [autodetect]: Frozen.

I just did a pacman -Syu and as it's installing the kernel26 package, I get this:

>>> Generating initial ramdisk, using mkinitcpio.  Please wait...
==> Building image "default"
==> Running command: /sbin/mkinitcpio -k 2.6.36-ARCH -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/kernel26.img
:: Begin build
:: Parsing hook [base]
:: Parsing hook [udev]
:: Parsing hook [autodetect]

... and I wait. I can't even get out of it with a ctrl+c -- I need to sudo killall pacman from another terminal.

I let it sit there for over an hour, and the process isn't generating any cpu activity to speak of...

Any suggestions for me? I'm not sure what to try next.

Re: Installing kernel26: Parsing hook [autodetect]: Frozen.

Switch the order of udev and autodetect. First base, then udev and then the rest.

Re: Installing kernel26: Parsing hook [autodetect]: Frozen.

Thanks very much for the reply, toad, but isn't it obvious that my HOOKS line in my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf already reads

HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata filesystems"

?

At least that's what I assume you're referring to...

Yep, that was it.

I had something similar once 'cos I fiddled around with hooks and that did the trick. Sorry it didn't work for you sad

Re: Installing kernel26: Parsing hook [autodetect]: Frozen.

I had the same problem except I didn't have time to look into the problem more than hitting ctrl + c and run pacman -Syu once more assuming that it would automatically start building kernel again. It finished without errors so I turned off, thinking that if any problems arise I could just use the fallback image.. What happened however was that upon restarting I couldn't boot either! It gives out that it can't connect to filesystem and throws me into the boot console.

How can I rebuild kernel without being able to boot? I can run ubuntu from a different partition.

Re: Installing kernel26: Parsing hook [autodetect]: Frozen.

LOL that is exactly what I'm afraid of. I haven't rebooted yet, and now I know I am appropriately afraid of doing so!

So what does one do in this situation?! Doesn't sound like you have a solution there, idjut. wink

Thanks for posting, though!

Re: Installing kernel26: Parsing hook [autodetect]: Frozen.

Whoa. I just tried

$ sudo pacman -S kernel26

again, but this time it worked!!

Still, perhaps others would like to hear the story behind this madness should someone be able to share it...

It did not work out fine. I managed to rebuild kernel26, but it doesnt find rootfs on boot!
