Wasn't the NT kernel build by that VMS guy?

Yes.  The original idea was created by him, but basterdized by the entire team - he spoke up about it at one point, saying that most of his stuff didn't work the way he intended...

Too bad too, becuase he seemed like a smart feller. I hear VMS has some nice file mechanics, as far as versioning and undelete goes. I know several DBA's who grew up with VMS, and they miss it sorely.

I never used it, so I don't know..

He was a smart fella. The funny thing however, was that NT was supposed to stand for New Technology. Yet practically everything in the kernel used old school OS techniques nicked from various Unix-based operating systems.

Re: Windows Longhorn: "It Just Works"

Indeed. It's a bit like the news about the update to IE (version 7). It's to include proper PNG support, better CSS support, tabbed browsing and IDN support. Of course, this is "new" in the MS world!

Don't say that so quickly... Today I saw a known non-geek walking through my school's halls wearing a "Get Firefox" T-shirt. 8)

what is a "known non-geek" to you? in my eyes, it's difficult to make this discrimination: is someone who knows how to use LaTeX a geek? does not-using-IE mean you are a geek? do you need to have the "kernel" compiled at least once to be called geek? or maybe it is related to the caffeine concentration in serum of your body? ... firefox is for non-geeks ... real geeks write their browser themselves ;-)

PS
we are almost off-topic with this thread

Good point... But geek or not, one kid wearing a Firefox shirt is a big improvement.

apropos wearable computing: migrosoft is the only company that sells watches that need to be activated to tell you what time it is:
