This is not exactly what you're asking, but might help https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pa … FDVD.2Fiso + https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pa … repository

Mind elaborating? What exactly went wrong?
You put the needed packages on the CD / DVD / pendrive, bring it to your friend, point pacman to that CD (or copy it to your friend's hard drive).
Creating a custom local repository is easy.

Karol, thanks for your help. I just feel the work involved is too much in this method. I was thinking of some thing like an option ' make Live CD' on PCLinuxOS

Is such a thing not possible on archlinux

Maybe archiso is closer to what you want?

Re: mirror image of my hard disk on CD/DVD

You can use a LiveCD of a distribution that has Partimage on it such as SystemRescueCd or Puppy Linux. Partimage does cloning on a filesystem level so you will also need to install or copy a master boot record (MBR). Your friend's disk can be smaller than yours but large enough to contain all the data.

You could also bring your disk to his place and use dd. This will clone all partitions along with the mbr (hardware level clone). Your friend's disk must be larger than or equal to yours. Then you can use gparted to expand his partitions to use all the disk.

Cloning a hard drive or a partition does not allow filtering out single directories or files. Also your hardware must be pretty much the same I guess.

Re: mirror image of my hard disk on CD/DVD

I used dd to clone a disk once. It takes a long time and it's slow if you use the default transfer block size of 512 bytes. try with option bs=1024 and other powers of 2 until you find one that is optimal. You can use the pv utility to monitor progress and transfer rate.

Indeed, or he can even just install them manually:

# pacman -U xxxxxxxxxx.pkg.tar.xz

That's definitely less work than using dd.
