[SOLVED] My desktop keeps randomly crashing

I saved all of the relevant log files with every message that was sent around the time of the last crash. Crashes seem to happen most often when I'm in the terminal. I'll be typing something, then suddenly, I get kicked back to the  console login screen, and gdm promptly restarts and sends me to the GUI version of the login screen. I've tried googling the error messages to troubleshoot the problem, but the furthest I've gotten was a post from another distro's forum saying that there was a bug in the kernel that was fixed. Even then, that guy would only crash when he pressed the enter key. I have no idea what's causing this.

My machine is a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz, 4 gb ram, with an nVidia GeForce 8600M 256 mb graphics card.

Here are the log outputs:

Re: [SOLVED] My desktop keeps randomly crashing

Did you do any updates to any packages you think were relevant to Gnome and GDM?

To see if it is a user config problem create a new user account and use that for a while. If that works then you know it's a config problem and can migrate your dot files across to this new account until it starts crashing again.

That FAILED LOGIN (#) on '/dev/tty2' FOR 'UNKNOWN' stuff is disconcerting and warrants further investigation. It doesn't look right.

Re: [SOLVED] My desktop keeps randomly crashing

Those are a lot of warnings, but 99% of the time warnings aren't critical; errors are.

Did you try using a live CD to see if the problem persists? If it does, you might be dealing with hardware rather than software instability.

P.S. Please use [ code ] tags to enclose your log excerpts, that would greatly improve readability.

Re: [SOLVED] My desktop keeps randomly crashing

I haven't done any updates on anything that would modify gnome or gdm. Once I finally got Arch to a usable state after getting all the hardware functioning properly, I started using it regularly, and it started crashing.

I'm pretty sure it's not hardware instability because my Windows 7 installation on the same machine functions without issues.

Re: [SOLVED] My desktop keeps randomly crashing

Post your Xorg.0.log file next time this occurs. It could be a graphics card problem that happens to crash X instead of the whole kernel.

Re: [SOLVED] My desktop keeps randomly crashing

I removed Arch Linux shortly after creating this thread. I just reinstalled the latest version a few days ago, with version 304 of the official nvidia driver, and after leaving my laptop on for a few days, it hasn't crashed at all. I'm gonna chalk up the previous problem I had to a driver issue.
