So I am having a problem with my system drive where read and write access to it is very very slow. Anytime it is accessed my cpu usages on one or both cores jumps to 100 when all my processes are sitting at less than 5%. the output of sudo hdparm -Tt /dev/sdb is
/dev/sdb:
Timing cached reads: 2 MB in 3.19 seconds = 641.04 kB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 2 MB in 3.19 seconds = 642.58 kB/sec
and sudo hdparm -I /dev/sdb is
/dev/sdb:

wow! that's slow!
Have you tried to check your hdd's SMART information, to see if it isn't damaged?
And what about other linux distros / OS's ? Do they do the same?
