Problems with HP Printing tool "hplip"

Hi !

I recently got a new old printer: A HP Laserjet 5P from Oct. '95.
Installation with cups and printing works fine. It's connected via a "Prolific" Parallel-USB Adapter

Now I want to use the hplip-program to read out the level of the cartridge.

But every hplip program like "hp-levels", "hp-info" and "hp-testpage" shows me a:

error: No device selected/specified or that supports this functionality.

or:

error:  No printers found.  Please setup a printer and try again.

So I startet "hp-setup" to configure the printer with the hplip-programm.

The terminal output:

error: No devices found on bus: usb

The automatic discovery, nor the manual discovery with the given USB Device and Bus ID are working sad
I tried for the ID's "002:004" and "067b:2305" but none of them is working.

Also working with the command-lien doesnt work:

[root /home/joschi] lpstat -d
System-Standardzielort: Hewlett-Packard_HP_LaserJet_5P

[joschi ~] hp-levels -p Hewlett-Packard_HP_LaserJet_5P

error: Invalid printer name: Hewlett-Packard_HP_LaserJet_5P
error: No device selected/specified or that supports this functionality.

or:

[joschi ~] hp-levels --device=hal:///org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_67b_2305_noserial_if0_printer_noserial

error: Invalid device URI: hal:///org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_67b_2305_noserial_if0_printer_noserial
error: No device selected/specified or that supports this functionality.

How do I find out the right printer-name and device-uri ?

Kind Regards

Re: Problems with HP Printing tool "hplip"

Try sudo hp-setup or sudo hp-toolbox. It worked very good for me.

Re: Problems with HP Printing tool "hplip"

Perhaps you need cups to provide an interface for printer.

There is also an alternate method to install via hp-setup.  It may help in finding the solution..use the command...... hp-setup -i...... and see what interactive install provides.

Re: Problems with HP Printing tool "hplip"

Have you considered the possibility that the error message is correct i.e. that your printer does not "support this functionality"?

Re: Problems with HP Printing tool "hplip"

Try checking www.hplipopensource.com when it comes back online.  There should be a support list with printer and what functions are supported.
