savage-dri and xrandr/wine problems

I've been having this problem for some time now and just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this annoying behavior with the savage video driver and dri.  I just did a pacman -Syu and saw that savage-dri was being upgraded along with libgl and mesa all using git packages so I was hopeful that a solution was at hand today but nadah.

The problem I saw was first when I tried to play Diablo II in wine on my old T21 thinkpad which has a Savage IX/MV video card.  As soon as you try to start Diablo the screen goes all garbled with colored bars and then kicks you out of X and back to my xdm login.  Trying to track down the problem, I tried downgrading savage-dri and libgl which worked for another problem sometime back but this appears to be something different as it is related to Diablo changing screen resolution between the intro screen and the game itself.  If I do a xrandr -s 800x600--normal resolution is 1024x768--exactly the same colored bars appear and then X dies and I'm back at my login screen.  Logs don't appear to help in any way and I'm just wondering if soneone else out there has found a workaround or if a bug report is the way to go.  The good thing is I don't use this laptop often and I still have Windblows that I can boot on it so it's not a dire situation.  Suggestions?
