For the last few months my arch keeps freezing. It started after changing my old radeon 9200 to radeon HD 4650. The system starts normally but after a short period of time it freezes completely (no mouse, no keyboard, only hard reset). First I thought it was done by flashplayer, but uninstalling it didn't help. I searched some and I found the trick with acpi=off. It helped, system didn't freeze, but mouse started to freeze. Keyboard is usable, but only for a short period of time (system ). Also when mouse freezes, turning the system off ends with erratic shutdown (after reboot system states, that disks were not unmounted clearly and replays transactions). All of this happens when working with X. After switching to console (ctrl+alt+1) system seems to work normally. Tried turning off KMS, but to no avail. I searched logs for errors but I couldn't find nothing helpful. It seems that it is graphics card related problem, but on windows there are no errors. System is up to date.
Proc: Athlon64 2800+
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4650
Sys: Arch 64, kernel: 2.6.36.2, xorg 1.9.2

Disable Composite in your Xorg configuration...
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "1"
EndSection
Try turning back on Composite every new driver release and see if the issue has been resolved or not.

Thanks for the reply. Tried that today, and it seems to work. If it stay that way I will mark the topic as solved.
Thanks again.

Shortly after writing previous post, system froze again, so still nothing.

maybe you culd tray with nousb option which may result with no usb devices, also you could add panic=10 which means after kernel panic is invoked system will reboot in 10 sec

panic=10 didn't do anything. System didn't rebooted.
Last weekend I installed Kubuntu. Version 9.10 and 10.04 LTS worked OK, but shortly after upgrading to 10.10 it all started again. Complete freeze.
