In case anyone else has the same problem: after upgrading to KDE 4.5.4, digikam would crash when I clicked Import -> Camera -> Canon EOS 7D. Also, when clicking on the digikam import from the USB tray icon.
After trying to find a known bug on kde.bugs.org, I on a whim tried reinstalling digikam (as in, pacman -S digikam), and now it works :-)
Hope this helps.

OK, so it's a bit more complicated... apparently I have to reinstall digikam whenever I want to import. If I reinstall, click import, cancel, then try again, it crashes and I have to reinstall before I can import.
will try a fresh profile to see what the issue is...

It crashes for me every time. Reinstalling doesn't help

I removed the two .db files in ~/Pictures, also
~/.kde4/share/apps/digikam
(but I kept ~/.kde4/share/config/digikamrc around) and now it seems to work. Since it's not my profile, and rebuilding the db files takes about two days altogether, I unfortunately can't debug it further.

Wow. I just deleted the ~/.kde4/share/apps/digikam folder and retried and the import worked without any problems. There must be some problem with the old cameras.xml.
Yay! I don't need to unplug the memory card to transfer pictures any more
