So I'm finally getting around to building a downright decent machine I'll be proud to call a 'server'. I have a substantial collection of movies, tv series, audio, and music video laying around on multiple USB hard drives and figured it's time to do something about it.
I've also been wanting a new TV in the bedroom for quite a while (3 years) to update my outdated one, a once proud and mighty 22"CRT monitor I snagged from my old work's color production system when they upgraded.
So I went on a spending spree on newegg and bought me a new tele and some hardware. I'm holding off on hard drives until the one I want goes on sale.
I've settled on using software raid 6 when I do get the drives and being the first time I'll have ever set up anything like this I started the process of reading and learning. (also to occupy the time until Monday when my hardware and TV will be delivered). The wiki I'm following says you can use any block device. I figure "HEY! I have three usb thumb drives and a usb hub. why not follow along and actually do it?"
I cat /proc/mdstats to see if the module is loaded as instructed. No dice.
It tells me if mdstats doesn't work to load the module 'raid456'
sudo modprobe raid456
I see an error message that I didn't directly cause... *PANIC*
"....'/lib/modules/2.6.29-ARCH' no such file or directory..."
I cd over to /lib/modules and there's "2.6.36-ARCH" *giggle* So right away I know I haven't rebooted, I save my open doc's and reboot. Just as it was powering down it dawned on me I should have checked my uptime!
I update at least semi-regularly... I guess what reason do I have to reboot if nothing is going wrong right? I remember when I first got Win2k and had my first uptime that made it past a month, then two months but it never withstood much longer than that. When I "upgraded to XP" I couldn't even make it two weeks without rebooting.
Exactly when did 2.6.29 get ousted from [core]? trying to get a feeling for how long this thing was up for.

Usually it takes one or two point releases before Arch pushes a new stable kernel to [core], so judging by the release date of 2.6.30.1 from kernel.org of 3rd July 2010, I'd say your uptime has probably been since some time in June

My home server usually gets rebooted only when I need to load a module and notice the same thing as you just did .
A tip: you could put the LTS kernel on there, I am very happy with it.

Changelog for .29 was 23-Mar-2009... dunno when it went into [core]...

At least I know I'm in good company. LMAO
I'll have a looksey-do at this LTS kernal.
(to be honest I'm a little nervous about this new kernal I'm running since (obviously) the old one went so well)

It's when you return your winter shoes to the cabinet. I usually do this in early February.

It always takes longer than you expect, even when you take into account Hofstadter's Law.
