Cannot add new partition to existing extended partition with GParted

Here is my current partition layout:

What I want is to create a new partition inside the extended partition /dev/sda4 with my unallocated space. When I right-click on the unallocated space and select New, GParted gave me this:

It seems that GParted *think* that I want to create a primary partition (which is obviously impossible, because I've already had 4 primary partitions).
How can I add a new partition to my existing extended partition?
Any help would be appreciated!

it's hard to see but i think the unallocated space is not in the extended partition.

i think you have to resize this partition to include the unallocated space.

shulamy is correct, you must first resize your current extended partition, /dev/sda4, to include the unallocated space.

Gparted will not let you do this while /dev/sda4 is mounted.  You will probably have to resize using a live CD or USB drive.  Gparted is offered as a live CD at http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php, and it's included on many other distributions' live CDs.
