NetworkManager plasmoid: "wireless enabled" greyed out

Hi,
I've installed Arch on a laptop with the intel 3945 wifi card. Everything is working flawlesly when using wicd, but with the Networkmanager plasma applet, the "enable wireless" button is greyed out (when starting with wifi turned off and then enabling it). It works OK when the wifi is on during startup. Is there a way of making the NetworkManager applet leave the "enable wireless" box ticked? I've tried altering the /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state file but that works only once after startup - when I turn the wifi on, the box is greyed out but stays ticked. When I turn it off and on again, the box stays greyed out but unticked.
Any ideas?

Thanks, Mike.
