window manager suggestions

Hey all,

I'm looking for a new window manager. I love fluxbox, it's great. However at the moment I'm going on a style craze and flux just isn't doing it for me. At the moment I'm running E17 but it's not quite stable enough or supported enough for my liking yet. I'm really not a fan of E16 but that's probably cause I don't know it. I want a window manager that's light, doesn't have stupid virtual root windows like E17 and I believe GNOME does, right click menu and pixmap support. By pixmap support, I mean I want to be able to design window borders and menu stuff with transparencies and crap like that. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: window manager suggestions

use xfce's windowmanager. xfwm you ain't have to start the panel if you don't want to. or consider using gnome and just disable the nautilus startup, this way you won't have virtual root windows.

Re: window manager suggestions

Openbox is cool. No eyecandy, but it looks pretty good anyway if you use a good theme.

E16 is actually a very nice WM - fast, looks good with the right theme, and I think it gives access to the GNOME and KDE menus. However, the iconbox and virtual desktops can be overlapped by other windows, which can create some functionality problems.

You are right about the iconbox/virtual desktop pager, but You can "place them on top". And you are right E16 detects kde and gnome menues....the big news in e16.8 is that you may use composite (you can enable it on the fly) and make your windows transparent (ranging from 100% to 20% visibility) and shadows (blurred or sharp)

I tried openbox, but i was missing the eyecandy big_smile ..

Re: window manager suggestions

The requirements of your window manager you specified in the first post are fluxbox biased.  You want a WM that meets the following:
* lightweight
* right-click root menu
* pixmap theme support

That pretty much describes fluxbox.

The root menu can be emulated in any wm (check out grootmenu)

Re: window manager suggestions

what about fvwm? i've never really used it, but it seemed like it had a lot of configuration options. otherwise, i don't see how you can go wrong with fluxbox. as phrakture pointed out, it has everything you need including transparency (in the dev version only, i think).

Re: window manager suggestions

If you want ultimate themability, use FVWM. If you want something with lots of eyecandy, use E16.8. I used E16 for quite a while and loved it, but then I came back to Openbox, like I always do.

Have a look into Arch wiki: http://wiki2.archlinux.org/index.php/Ge … AndRunning

It is not up to date (but still usefull). But as far as i know "miqorz" is going to bring it up to date.

Otherwise gentoo`s forum is always good for a look. For example this http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-71 … enbox.html

I used openbox for a long time, but i fell in love with pekwm (dev snapshot). It's very similar to openbox, but it's more configureable in my eyes.

My screenshot: http://cip.physik.uni-wuerzburg.de/~lor … pril05.png

Here you can download the pekwm-dev package and some nice themes.

Re: window manager suggestions

Hi,
Looks like I won't be with Fluxbox for long. big_smile I always wanted something between Fluxbox and FVWM, and probably found it - Pekwm. Fluxbox is too little configurable for me, and FVWM is too much, looks like Pekwm is a good choise for me, so:
Pplease post your mpc.sh script, if you can smile!
Can you share your theme too?
I cant find any resources for (non-pixmap) themes for Pekwm. Any suggestions?

As you can see - I am still searching for good window manager (I've found my best distro already big_smile), so any help on this subject would be realy valuable.

Re: window manager suggestions

I've just moved from enlightenment to openbox. It's just so fast and lightweight compared to anything I've used before.

I've set up xcompmgr and bound ctrl+scrollwheel to adjust window transparencies, got a little torsmo thing going, and it's great.
