new install with 64 bit core cd got as far as Configuration and need to edit rc.conf to enable lvm.
I'm using the nano option but etc/rc.conf is blank opening in nano as /mnt/etc/rc.conf [New File] same with mkinitcpio.conf and all the other files offered by AIF
edit: on further investigation it seems i don't have a /mnt/etc directory on the system, rebooted and tried the install from scratch several times now with same result

Packages could not have been installed correctly if nothing is there, check drive is formatted and has filesystems set up

that's weird, seems like a package did not install correctly.
probably related to https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/15854?project=6
when you see 'package installation complete' be sure to have a look at the entire pacman log

/var/log/pacman.log
/var/log is the standard folder for log files.
