Keyboard and mouse freeze in X with xterm, emacs

After a recent upgrade and while in X my keyboard will freeze the screen for 30 seconds while typing. If I leave X, typing is uninterrupted, but if I type the shutdown command it can take 30 seconds for the system to respond. Since this is a new event, I am puzzled about where to look.

Further investigation show that this may be a KDE problem. Any suggestions would be helpful.
