Getting multiple programs to use SPDIF?

Alright, so after hours of screwing around with ALSA I finally got it to give me audio through the spdif port on my computer. Now I seem to have one problem: when I play through the SPDIF/D port I only can get one program to use sound at a time. I looked to see if dmix was setup incorrectly and tried to find tutorials for it, but sadly it seems the only one is on the ALSA wiki and it's near impossible to follow, nor does it even seem to answer anything I need to know. Is there any way to setup dmix so that I can have multiple programs playing audio through the spdif port instead of having to switch between them?
Not sure what info I need to post, so just tell me what you want and I'll put it up on here.

Re: Getting multiple programs to use SPDIF?

telling what soundcard you have would help a lot.

Normally this should just work (tm).

I actually did manage to get it to work, I had to put some stuff in my asoundrc. Thanks anyway though.
