Something like dzen2, but asynchronous/event driven

So I've been using dzen2 for a long time now. It's great, but I don't like how I poll for information. For example, after a certain amount of loops, it launches my weather program, or in every loop, it checks the new directory in my mail directory, or updates the time, or song information.

So instead of polling, I'd like my scripts to push notifications to a notification bar. So when I receive emails, a notification is pushed to the bar. However, I'd like it to stay fairly minimal, much like how dzen2 is.
