installed kde with only root login can't login

I installed Archlinux with only kde and only a root login
It won't let me in as root and I am at a username prompt.
How can I get to a command line and add a regular user?

Ctrl+alt+f1
login with root credentials then run adduser

Try ctrl+alt+f2 to f6, otherwise you can select a console session from the kdm login screen under "Menu".    Did you by any chance remove/comment out all of the tty lines in /etc/inittab?  This might explain why you don't get a login prompt.

Re: installed kde with only root login can't login

None of the ctrl alt f's work
the console session goes to the same flashing cursor and then returns back to the logon screen
I did not touch the inittab file at all
I also notice that the screen is flashing about every 10 seconds
Anything else to try or should I just reinstall and create a normal user first?
