Filesystem Recommendations - Multi-Core Arch64

Hello,

I'm running Arch64 and have 2 dual-core CPU's (so 4 cores obviously) and 8GB's of RAM. I bought a new 2TB hard drive and I'm trying to decide what filesystem to go with. Being a Media-Server and doing some video editing (capturing raw DV and editing with Kino, etc.) will be the drives main purpose. Most of the time only my computer (the one the drive will be in) will be accessing the drive, but there would be times that another computer would be reading from it as well.

In the past I've been using ReiserFS and always liked it fairly well. I'm currently having trouble on all my drives using ReiserFS, but I don't know as the filesystem is the problem at the moment.

So I just wanted some recommendations and reasons for choosing a certain filesystem for this drive.

I'm curious about Reiser4 and how safe/stable it is (I've never used it), and whether it's a good candidate. Some of the data on the drive will be very important. I plan to make some backups but just the same I'm concerned with reliability.

Also I have one 1TB drive and four 500GB drives that I wish to use the same filesystem on as the 2TB drive.

Thanks for the advice on the matter. I hope this is the proper section for this post.

Apart from ReiserFS and/or Reiser4, XFS perks my interest a bit.

Get a coin.

Round 1:   ext4 (heads) vs jfs (tails)
Round 2:   xfs (heads) vs reiserfs4 (tails)
Round 3:  winner round 1 (heads) vs winner round 2 (tails)

Or, you could do some research yourself...  this is already well covered on the forums and wiki.

Reiser isn't really optimized for large files, XFS is but doesn't perform that well on system partitions. Ext/JFS is a middle ground with decent performance on both sides.

So either just use Ext/JFS for everything, or use different filesystems for system and data partitions.

Oh, I hadn't thought of doing any research. Thank you.

You wouldn't be rude by any chance would you?

Well, you showed no evidence of doing any research on your own so I'm glad my advise was helpful in pointing you in that direction.

Yes.  That is generally the way I feel.  But don't take it personally...  it is a general condescension I possess towards all people.

Oh it was helpful. I flipped a coin to choose which search results to click on, then I let my dog do all the scrolling.

I guess I should have pasted in everything I'd looked up, but I wasn't aware you'd want to read it.

How exacly does XFS perform for multimedia partitions (since it's best with large files) in terms of pure read/write speed compared to ext4 or JFS?
And how does JFS perform overall on desktop compared to ext4?

The Avatar of Time, i do hope you understand you kind of killed the thread yourself now? Regardless of the use of flipping coins in decision making processes, the only use of flamewars is to get topics closed. Next time, please use the report button if you encounter any unsuitable behaviour on the forums, instead of going at it yourself.

Closed.
