Announcements, Package and Security Advisories

I'd like to suggest that this particular subforum be used for exactly what it says, not only in terms of only allowing specific persons the authority to start threads, but also in terms of allowing only these people to add to these threads. Discussion should be kept to the usual subforums.

My reason for this request is that this subforum is for announcements and advisories. So every time I see that there is a new post I will click to view the subforum assuming that it is something I need to know. And very often it is only a continuing discussion of something I have already noted. For example the current long discussion on kde 4.6. That discussion should be in the desktop environment subforum.

Also I would like to request that announcements on the home page (latest news) should be in this particular subforum as well so that there only needs to be 1 place for people to check.

Otherwise put all arch-related announcements, package and security advisories on the front page and keep the current subforum for sundry announcements (ie not related to the health of my arch installation) as what it mainly is right now, and name the subforum more appropriately.

Re: Announcements, Package and Security Advisories

The usefulness of the forum would be diminished if posting were limited to only a handful of people. Some issues will only appear for some users with particular package combinations or hardware. Advisories passed through the chosen few would reach users later and thus be of less benefit when critical issues arise.

Perhaps a better solution would be to split the forum into "Announcements" and "Package and Security Advisories". The latter would only be for warning users of potential problems and for providing solutions to those problems (i.e. for issues related to the health of your installation, as you put it).

I suppose "Announcements" would be for non-official announcements from community members regarding things that are of interest to the rest of the community, e.g. the launch of an Arch related site.

As for having all important announcements in one place, I think the issue is largely a technical one.

EDIT:
The "report" link can be used to flag threads that don't belong in the forum.

Re: Announcements, Package and Security Advisories

Thanks Xyne. I would have no problems with the solution you propose. Was waiting to see if others feel the same but it doesn't seem to be an issue with others however. sad
