Any fellow Archers using an i3-xxx chip? I'm wondering what Xorg driver to use...

Definitely xf86-video-intel. I have a Core i3 550. Works great (for 2D and HD video.)

what about using compiz effects? is it possible with intel i3?

I'm using Xfce so I don't know. I went to see the wiki page about Compiz, but it's way too complicated for me to try... All I can say is Xfce's compositing thing works, though I have it disabled at the moment because it doesn't really add much and it may cause problems with 3D apps (I don't know for sure.)
I've tried a few games though: World of Warcraft works decently with everything set to low, but I'm not sure if a raid situation, or what used to be Dalaran, would be playable. Trackmania Nations United (or whatever the current name is) works fine in "performance" mode in 1280x800. Half Life 2 is perfectly playable in directx 7 mode in 1280x800 (with white boxes in places of light sources.) Stalker 1 works in a small window with low settings but the skybox is bugged. The Witcher crashes. Osmos is ok. Braid runs at something like 25 fps. Generally, don't expect to be gaming at 1920x1200 even on low settings.
