Kernel panic/crash using 2.6.36, iwl3945 and airmon-ng

Hi

I'm unable to log what really happens, I tried with strace aswell as valgrind but they don't pick it up. It happens whenever I start airmon-ng with:

airmon-ng start wlan0

I get a kernel panic without being connected to wireless, and with. Also doing it outside of X in TTY1.

Picture from my phone: http://ompldr.org/vNjNnMg

So yeah, not sure where to go from here. It works fine with 2.6.35.

It happens on Atheros AR928X with ath9k module as well. It was already mentioned in [arch-general] mailing list - ath9k, ar928x, monitor mode

Oh, I don't follow the mailing lists - perhaps I should :-).

Thanks.

Exactly the same happens to me with ath5k. Is there any progress yet?
What are you guys doin'? Downgrade kernel or waiting?

Re: Kernel panic/crash using 2.6.36, iwl3945 and airmon-ng

There is an Arch bug report about it, and an upstream one at the kernel bugzilla - if you could post there, that would be helpful to the kernel devs.

The only solution is stick with 3.6.35 for the time being.

Please see my topic on the same issue which shows it's a general problem with not just Intel drivers.

And for the solution, read the bug report on Flyspray.

Instead of saying 'me too', please read the info provided in this topic, which points to 1) the Arch Flyspray and 2) the kernel bugzilla.

Re: Kernel panic/crash using 2.6.36, iwl3945 and airmon-ng

This issue has to lie with kernel 2.6.36 (and maybe lives on in 2.6.37 with the latest RC.) I had no such problems, up until I updated to 2.6.36.

I have a Realtek rt8187se wireless chipset, and I can invoke a kernel panic every single time, like so:

# pm-suspend
(wake up from suspend)
# iwlist scan

What I see is:

# iwlist scan

lo Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

Kernel panic - not syncing: HwThreeWire(): CmdReg: 0XFF REIWE bits are not clear!!

Pid: 5357, comm: iwlist Tainted: G C 2.6.36-ARCH #1

The rest is a call trace, with the dreaded blinking capslock + scrolllock keys.

This only happens if I resume from suspend. If I power on the computer, but never suspend, I never suffer a kernel panic, even when I scan for wireless networks.

Bringing the wireless interface down and up, or changing it to monitor mode, has no effect either. The only common factor is resuming from suspend.

Any particular release date for 2.6.37? I cannot apply the patch, says file is missing or something like that.

What worked for me was using the LTS kernel.

I didn't know that existed.... i think i willl give it a try... i have been waiting for long time for the problem to "fix itself" - i have no time for applying patches or workarounds... i think i willl try this solution in my laptop asap..... btw.... how did you install it? just install the package or do you have to uninstall the other kernel or edit any config file?

Thanks!

Re: Kernel panic/crash using 2.6.36, iwl3945 and airmon-ng

He said 'install', not 'build'.

The least one can do is consult pacman to see if it happens to offer the LTS kernel.

Thanks!

pacman -S kernel26-lts

And then you have to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file:

Add these lines:

#(2) Arch Linux LTS
title Arch Linux LTS
root   (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz26-lts root=Your_root_partition_here ro
initrd /kernel26-lts.img

And if you want LTS Fallback, also add:

#(3) Arch Linux LTS Fallback
title Arch Linux LTS Fallback
root   (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz26-lts root=Your_root_partition_here ro
initrd /kernel26-lts-fallback.img

And there you go - when booting, choose the LTS kernel and airmon-ng should work OK.
