i'm not sure what the bit about D-Bus is and i'm even less sure about what the problem in general is. if anyone could help me i'd appreciate it.
Thanks.

Are dbus and hal running?
Mr Green

hal is running and i thought dbus wasn't a daemon, just running whenever it needs to... in any case i have dbus installed. and hal IS running.

Slightly off-topic, but do you have to use vmware? It's always a pain to install and maintain on Arch. Virtualbox is so much easier - maybe it would work for you?
Also, dbus is a daemon, and should be running.

i would use virtualbox in any other case, but i need directx support, which virtualbox does not offer.

i dunno what to say, it's never worked for me before... i suppose i'll give it another go. even though it seems a little cheap to take a different approach when i run into a problem
EDIT: the method described on the arch wiki for virtualbox seems really hackish, which would be fine except that it isn't working.
