Halt, suspend to disk and suspend to ram all work fine, but I can't get this machine to reboot - it goes through the usual halt procedure, but afterwards does not power off the hardware. Instead it powers off the screen, but I hear the fans going and the LEDs stay on. It's very odd. I have no problems just halting and powering back up, but I was wondering if anyone had experienced this, or knew what could be causing it?
Happy to post any relevant outputs. Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Does it make any difference if you attempt to reboot as root or normal user? How do you reboot, e.g. from shell, menu entry in desktop environment, etc.?

Just rebooting from tty1, using sudo reboot. I don't use gnome/kde etc, just dwm.
Occasionally the system does reboot, although most of the time it 'stalls' as described above.
And yes, having just tested, this happens when using sudo and while logged in as root. My usual account cannot reboot.

perhaps try
sudo reboot -f

That command just skips the usual halting procedure and as usual it hangs. The hard drive makes a horrible sound as I manually switch off the power.
