Hi, I'm new to arch and the forums So I installed arch and had no problems with the install thnx to the great wiki then when I tried installing nouveau for my nvidia card it didnt work so I tried vesa it worked and I installed gnome but the resolution was just 800x600 and the wiki said that I should use nvidia-xconfig but after I did that X dosent work whenever I try starting gnome it says no screens found ! What should I do ?
Offline
The nouveau driver should work with just a minimal configuration in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nouveau.conf (see the wiki for details). The tool nvidia-xconfig is for the proprietary nVidia drivers. So, now I am guessing what drivers you are really getting to run: nouveau or the proprietary nVidia drivers.

So I should install nouveau drivers?

Did you reboot?

When using the nouveau-driver, did you create the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nouveau.conf? (see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/No … iguration). If that is no solution try using "Xorg -configure" to generate a xorg.conf. If that's no solution either, try posting your xorg.conf generated by nvidia-xconfig. then we can try debugging it.
Sincerely, Fleet

Ok guys I got it somewhat fixed, I reinstalled Arch then installed the vesa drivers again and seemed ok and I also setup Openbox but the problem I face now is the resolution can anyone help?

Do you know the model of the nvidia card? 'lspci' should tell you.
You can try:
lspci -k | grep -A 3 VGA
This should tell you what video card is being detected by the kernel and which kernel modules (drivers) are capable of handling it.

K I did what u said here's the output.
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G96 [GeForce 9400 GT] (rev a1)
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. Device 133a
Kernel modules: nvidiafb
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 01)
So now i should install nvidiafb ?

Install either nouveau or nvidia.

Just to expand what karol said, if your installation went correctly, either nouveau or nvidia should work. I can run either one without an /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Offline
if you had nouveau installed did you blacklist it from being loaded? Also, check if nvidia isn't blacklisted. Could you tell us what happens if you modprobe nvidia? Also, you could try to reinstall both nvidia and nvidia-utils. Could you post your xorg.conf?
Here is mine, you can check it as a reference, since we have similar cards. Don't forget to make a backup first!

Have you updated your system? In your /var/log/Xorg.0.log I read "Current Operating System: Linux Ghost 2.6.33-ARCH".
Offline
Might be half of the problem, most issues I have seen on forums are related to system not being up to date.
If there is a reason for using old kernel [which has not been stated in this case] fair enough
