The problem is the following: whenever I am listening to music, the sound "travels" between center and right channel. At first I am forced to set mixer's balance to the outmost left and still the sound goes to the right. Then during the listening, the sound goes back to center again for some time. Sometimes, when I change the volume louder, sound jumps right into the right channel and stays there.
I have tried different players (xmms and kaboodle), different sound daemons, sound as compiled in into kernel, sound as modules and two different sound cards (C-media and integrated via vt283), running xmms as root... - still no luck

from a "logical test " angle, starting with a known source, maybe first download an audio test cd.

http://www.ebu.ch/en/technical/publicat … /index.php allsorts
could then see if the problem is repeatable or erratic and trace from there.
at the other end, have you swapped headphones or speakers ? Play a known source and wiggle a few connections. could be a dodgy jackplug or cable.

Thanks, Kern! I finally checked the cables and a faulty cable was the reason. I just didn't believe it could appear this way.
