Compiz and 3D gaming

has anyone successfully been able to play a 3D game (like Regnum Online or Second Life... or even Astromenace) while using compiz* or having it as a standalone desktop?  I get constant glitches (most often being freezes and lack of mouse/keyboard functionality) and just haven't had a good experience with this at all.  I've tried switching the window manager to XFCE or Openbox (which are both installed), but it doesn't quite do that properly, so that doesn't help the situation cause I lose normal desktop functionality for making the switch (no title bars and similar issues).

So I'm pretty much stuck between a rock and a hard place.  Is it possible to use Compiz while 3D gaming?

Re: Compiz and 3D gaming

I use compiz while 3D gaming (wine) all the time. What graphics card are you on?

One solution is to start your game in a different X server with bare-minimum stuff (maybe just openbox).

Re: Compiz and 3D gaming

I've got an ATI Mobility 4250 GPU.

I hope I don't have to open games in another server, that would be a HUGE workaround and not very user-friendly... Prefer to be as efficient as possible.

Re: Compiz and 3D gaming

Well I don't play serious games anymore (like WoW), but when i was doing so, it went fine under different distros using compiz (like Mint or *buntu).
On Arch I tried several games (the ones coming from the Humble indie bundle) and they were working fine with compiz.

I have an nVidia 9600GT with the "current" driver.

Is that GPU you have (*Mobility*) a laptop GPU? that may be the issue, since most games don't support the laptop versions of supported GPUs.

Re: Compiz and 3D gaming

it is a laptop GPU, but I did not have issue playing 3D games on this laptop without Compiz standalone... do not recall trying with any other DE running with Compiz on top, as I have not tried 3D gaming on that type of setup in quite some time...

Re: Compiz and 3D gaming

ok, not all 3D games give me issue... Astromenace freezes and Second Life seems to render cairo-dock useless... freedroidrpg seems to work fine at the moment... going to see what other games I have issue with at this point... last I recalled, Regnum Online refused to even start.

Re: Compiz and 3D gaming

Unless you play in a window, you can unredirect fullscreen windows using ccsm->general options.
That way compiz should be bypassed.

-edit
Or maybe the problem could be a small amount of video ram (?)

Re: Compiz and 3D gaming

will try that... vid ram is shared (up to 1917MB, and I've got 8GB of DDR3 in this nice little toy) tongue

my humble input: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ru … _X_display
I wrote a wrapper script with some useful tweaks to easily run apps on separate X display
