When Firefox is uninstalled, the entire /opt/mozilla dir is not removed - /opt/mozilla/lib/firefox-[version] is left. As a result, Firefox-dependent apps will not start properly after a Firefox upgrade.

The package should not leave files there. Pacman removes empty directories belonging to a package if it is able to. If you placed files in it, it won't remove them.

my switch from 1.0.3 to 1.0.4 went flawlessly - no empty directories at all...

I've never had a prob with this as well. The only instance where pacman doesn't remove the dirs is in the home dir /home/<user>/.mozilla . Otherwise i've never heard of this happening either.
