sound problems

Hi!  I've been using Linux for 2 1/2 years but am new to Arch.  I have used Slackware and Fedora Core.  Right now I'm dual booting with Arch and Fedora Core on a P3 tower.  My sound card is an ESS Solo and I just used pacman to update my system to kernel 2.6.11.7-ARCH and then used alsaconf to setup alsa for my soundcard....this all went smoothly with no errors.  I checked alsamixer to make sure the sliders were up and the output plugin that xmms is using is alsa.

When I try to stream music with xmms I get an error that reads:

Please check that:

Your soundcard is configured properly
You have the correct output plugin selected
No other program is blocking the soundcard

Also, /lib/modules/2.6.11.7-ARCH exists and lsmod shows my soundcard.

Any ideas?

Re: sound problems

xmms is set to use OSS output... you can do two things:

1) *recommended* switch xmms to output to the default alsa device
2) modprobe snd-pcm-oss in addition to your alsa module, to enable oss support

Re: sound problems

Oh, and if this is a faulty kernel-how would I use pacman to install a new kernel?

Re: sound problems

that modprobe didn't seem to do anything and xmms is already setup to play using alsa.  No sound-mplayer gives an error too.

Re: sound problems

To reinstall the kernel, just do:
pacman -S kernel26
and answer yes to the question (Upgrade anyway?).

Re: sound problems

Reinstalling the same kernel didn't do anything on reboot.  Could I use a different kernel with pacman...say 2.6.9?

Re: sound problems

Why would it be a kernel issue that you don't have sound?  Have you followed the wiki to setting up ur sound card?
