[SOLVED} ppp-How to dial up without a dialer

Dear Archers

On my desktop, I have installed ARCHISO-2010.5-core. Now, for installing X11 and others, I need to connect to internet.
I have a Huawei EC325 USB modem, BSNL is my service provider, connection is dial-up.
Since there is no wvdial in core install of arch, i am finding it too difficult to connect to net

I PROMISE THAT I HAVE FOLLOWED SUBJECT ARCHWIKI INSTRUCTIONS, but to no avail.
Man pppd instructs to use "pppd call isp". Followed this,  with out success.

Pl. suggest a method to connect to net

I downloaded wvdial, wvstream, xplc afresh, loaded on USB installed using pacman -U command

thanks to everybody

I think wvdial only has 2 depencies, wvstreams and another one? So why not burn them to cd and install from that, then continue as usual?

^^ exactly. I am also from India & have same isp & internet connection.
I did the same, download wvdial & wvstreams from Arch website (from some other pc) & install it manually using "pacman -U" option.

then u can use wvdial easily...

Re: [SOLVED} ppp-How to dial up without a dialer

loaded wvdial-1.61-2-x86_64.pkg.tar and wvstreams-4.6.1-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz on a USB stick
and gave the command pacman -U wvdial.
It says error: cannot open package wvdial.
Pl. guide

I am convinced that Huawei EC325 USB modem will not work with plain pppd

Re: [SOLVED} ppp-How to dial up without a dialer

Try this instead

pacman -U /path/to/your/usb/stick/wvdial-xx-yy-zz.pkg.tar.xz

Re: [SOLVED} ppp-How to dial up without a dialer

Dear Archers

I loaded wvdial, wvstream xplc on Transcend JetFlash, and tried to install on Arch.

While mounting the USB, it asks for a file system. When I specify vfat, it says "error. wrong file system"

what should be the file system for USBflash? ext2, ext3?

Re: [SOLVED} ppp-How to dial up without a dialer

It depends on the usb stick.

If it were mounted you could check it with

 fdisk -l

I think, not sure if that'll work unmounted [I automount] but you could try it

OK, I just unmounted and it worked still. FWIW a stock usb stick I have was fat16

Re: [SOLVED} ppp-How to dial up without a dialer

mounting issues are now solved.

when i give pacman -U command, it says 'cannot open .pkg.tar.z'

wvdial is .gz
wvstream is .xz
xplc is .gz
are these packages /extension  for wvdial correct?

Re: [SOLVED} ppp-How to dial up without a dialer

Download wvdial, wvstreams, xplc and usb_modeswitch (and any other missing dependency) packages for your architecture from http://www.archlinux.org/packages/ and install them with pacman -U <packagename>, as root.

Append a new profile to /etc/wvdial.conf

[Dialer bsnlnet]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","bsnlnet"
Stupid Mode = 1
Modem Type = Analog Modem
ISDN = 0
Phone = *99#
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB3
Username = " "
Password = " "
Baud = 460800

**The Teracom device from BSNL attaches the modem to /dev/ttyUSB3. Change this to the appropriate ttyUSB as required.

Connect the modem and wait till it is mounted and switched by usb_modeswitch. Dial out using the new profile with wvdial bsnlnet. You might need to do this as root.
