drive order mixed up at boot

i have just installed a new sata drive into a box which has two ide drives, master and slave.

now when i boot arch the boot sometimes fails with "cannot find dev/sdb1" or similar, ending up at the ramfs prompt

then the next boot will be fine

is it possible with a mixed sata pata set up, that drive order is sometimes mixed up at boot?

ps, the ramfs prompt doesn't seem to respond to commands like reboot, halt, etc. is it poss to reboot from there?

Re: drive order mixed up at boot

From what I understand it's udisks changing the order the drives are seen in.

You can get around it by using the UUID in fstab

Re: drive order mixed up at boot

Udev loads modules asynchronously, thus multiple devices changes names sometimes.
Check this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fstab#UUIDs
